Guide to Brass

Guide to Brass

Posted by Charlotte Boates on

We first introduced raw brass in our Bathing Hand Shower. Chosen for its inherent warmth, tactile feel, and longevity, it’s since become a defining material across our collection of outdoor tools at GOODLAND. Our in-house design studio often chooses brass for our garden and outdoor tools, whether that’s the brass fittings on our Everlasting Garden Hose, our garden hose accessories like our Brass Garden Hose Nozzle and Brass Shut Off Valve, as well as our Brass Outdoor Faucet.

Our Raw Brass

Our design team selects the type of brass that’s best suited for the object or tool. Take our Everlasting Garden Hose, where our design team specifically chose to use brass for the fittings for its inherent durability and crush-resistance, as opposed to weaker materials like plastic or polymer. Our designers also opted to use a lead-free brass for our garden hose fittings, making our Everlasting Garden Hose drinking water safe.

The distinctive character of brass makes it a good fit for objects and tools with a simple, sculptural form that showcases the material. Take our Brass Outdoor Faucet, with a design inspired by Peter Zumthor’s Therme Vals in Switzerland, and its artful yet simple design that highlights the beauty of pure materials. The same is true for our Hand Shower in Raw Brass, where the brass gives a reassuring weight that makes using it a satisfying, tactile experience.

In our Wall-Mounted Hose Hanger, brass was chosen as a material option for its durability and heirloom-quality, while continuing the material palette of our other brass accessories to allow for a cohesive look across outdoor spaces.

We aim for all of our brass goods to have a natural finish. Instead of artificially trying to preserve the look of new brass, we opt for raw, untreated brass. This allows the brass to gain a deeper patina over time, as it shifts from a bright and yellow hue to a dark, bronze-like color. We find beauty in how a material patinas through use and care, earning a distinctive look as unique as its owner.

The Benefits of Brass

We choose our materials at GOODLAND with thought and intention, and brass is no exception. It’s an artful and character-filled material that’s perfect for a range of uses, whether gardening or bathing.

It’s strong and durable. Brass is regularly chosen for its durability and longevity, as it can resist wear and tear. This is why we see so much brass in locks, hinges, and other uses where it’s essential the material doesn’t wear down over time.

It’s resistant to corrosion. Solid, raw brass will not corrode or rust over time. While raw brass will gain a beautiful and protective patina, it’s naturally resistant to corrosion. This makes it an exceptional choice for tools and objects used outdoors and exposed to the natural elements.

It’s beautiful in design. Brass has an inherent warmth that works beautifully in designing products and spaces, whether as a base material or accent material. We find the warmth and depth allows for brass to be a natural fit in many outdoor spaces.

It doesn’t require maintenance. Raw brass is a low maintenance material, allowing you to free up time on what matters most. To care for raw brass, simply wipe away any grime or dust with a soft cloth.

Brass and the Environment

Raw brass is considered a material choice that’s kinder to our planet. Similar to aluminum, brass can be recycled over and over again, which helps make it a more sustainable material choice. Brass can easily be restored, and the recycling process uses less energy than producing new brass. Unlaquered brass, or raw brass, doesn’t contain any toxic coatings which can harm the environment, as well.

The durability and longevity of raw brass is also closely tied to its sustainability. When we use the objects and tools we already own again and again, it puts less strain on the finite resources of our planet. With this in mind, choosing quality, well-made goods when you do need to purchase something is kinder for the environment.
